Dog of the Week

That's Schroeder. He was being very well-behaved, waiting for his human, sitting under a table by the window. He gave me a very friendly lick of the hand when I said hello.

Is Schroeder named for Schroeder from Peanuts? I actually forgot to ask. I hope so, though. He's great, as was his moody, memorable creator, Charles M. Schulz.

Dog of the Week

Dog of the week, it's been good to have you back. We've had quite a dog dry spell at University Book Store, but the last few weeks have brought a new crop of four-legged, furry friends to our store, and we've been happy to share images of them with you.

Up there is a little boxer puppy named Bjorn. She didn't want her photo to be taken at first—preferring instead to sit in the photographer's lap—but when her human picked her up, she managed to pay attention and pose for the camera. Good girl, Bjorn.

Dog of the Week

Here's Brody. He's young. I expected him to be a little more energetic—being that he's a puppy and all—but apparently he was tuckered out from all the attention he'd been getting before I came at him with the camera.

Good boy, Brody. Nice posing.

Dog of the Week

This is Buck. He's nine months old. And 100 pounds!

He joined our Bellevue staff for their Dog-lover's Open House in February, and has doubled in size since. Doubled.

Good boy, Buck. Keep eating.

Dog of the Week!

Been a while, Dog of the Week. Where have you been? Waiting for Spring, maybe?

That's Zulie. Zulie is a 7 1/2 week old English bulldog. She visited our Bellevue store.

We hope to see her a lot.

"Zulie" is, according to her human, the Arabic word for "peace."

Which reminds us, of course, that recently Richard Bausch's amazing short novel Peace came out in paperback.

Dog of the Week

This is Sydney. She genuinely enjoyed sniffing the store thoroughly. She also seemed to enjoy her cookie, once it had been thoroughly sniffed. She was about as friendly as a dog can possibly be without actually bursting.
Good Dog, Sydney!

And a River Runs Through (the Store)... and Sits

This is River. He's only three months old, but look how good he is about sitting for a photograph without even getting a treat.
Good boy, River!

Incredibly Fast Dog of the Week

This (kinda) is Skipper. He was really, really fast and really, really excited by all the people calling his name in the hope of getting him to look into the camera. This would be the best of the bunch, as skipper photos go.

The pause was a brief one, then he immediately returned to being Skipper. You get the idea. Good dog, Skipper.

Dog of the Week!

Here's Fergie, a 6 year old sheepdog. We love Fergie. She has the most expressive eyes -- which never miss the sight of a good cookie, no matter how far away.
Fergie can come by the Used Desk any time she likes. We'll always be happy to see and be seen by her.
(Oh yeah, her person's nice too.)

A Four Footed Friend

It's been awhile since we posted one, but here's a Dog of the Week. His name is Finn and he is about the sweetest boy ever to stop by for a treat at the Used Books Desk.

Despite the fresh snow that just started falling, Finn seems, quite sensibly, not to have opted for colorful -- not to say embarrassing -- Christmas dogwear.

He's clearly too much the young sport for such silliness.

Good boy, Finn.

Dog of the Week

This is Coco. She has quite a face, doesn't she?

Her human is on faculty at UW. So, not only is she dog of the week, she's the dawg of the week, too.

Dog of the Week

This is Isabella. She's visiting us for the day. She, apparently, enjoys pita bread.

You can shape the hair on her head into a little mohawk. I couldn't get her to pose with it, though. You'll just have to trust me.

Good girl, Isabella.

Dog of the Week

Quick one, here. This is Sophie. She's awesome.

Dog of the Week

Up above is Nila, a mere pup. Cute as a button, that one.

She's a wee black lab. Much like the narrator of the new book The Labrador Pact.

Ah, a book narrated by the family dog! There's a popular conceit. Here's a game: make a list of books with dog narrators. Go!

Dog of the Week

Valentine's Day knocked Dog of the Week to Friday, but he's here. This is Deuce. Pretty fella, isn't he? Kind of looks like he has plans and schemes hatching behind those eyes.

Makes you want to read some books about the brain, doesn't. Well, by gum, we've got some. And we've got some on sale, too!

Here are three titles from our Neuroscience section that are (at least as of today, February 15, 2008) on sale:

This Is Your Brain on Music by Daniel Levitin: usually $15, on sale for $12

Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks: usually $26, on sale for $20.80

Proust was a Neuroscientist by Jonah Lehrer: usually $24, on sale for $19.20

The sale price are NOT permanent, though, so order by phone or online, or stop by the store today.

Dog of the Week

Hey there book/dog fans. The Shelver is finally back from an extended vacation, and with him comes a brand new dog of the week.*

This is Cody:

He's young, and refuses to stop moving long enough for his picture to be taken, so instead, I made a little movie of him chewing on my shoe. And shoelace.

Good boy, Cody.

* And, apparently, a need to speak in the third person.**

** Speaking of odd choices for a narrator's voice, have any of you readers had a chance to check out Joshua Ferris's novel, Then We Came To the End. I'm a little late getting to it, I know, what with it being on quite a few top ten lists and getting the National Book Award nomination and all. Sorry. My reading list finally opened up a space.

I mention it, though, because it is in first person plural. We did this. We did that. An interesting strategy, usually. A difficult one to pull off, too, because it tends to imply that the story being told carries a lot of weight, as if the first person singular narrator wants to spread around the blame.

In this case, it seems to work pretty well.

Dog of the Week

This Dachshund-filled December ends—as does 2007—with our friend Willie. When I took his photo, he decided he needed to do a little carpet wiggling.

Good Willie. Wiggle away.

Dog of the Week

Ah, the noble Mastiff. Beautiful dogs.

Above is a picture of Big Boy. (At least, I believe it's Big Boy and not Big Boi.)

Big Boy was nice enough to pose for us in the lobby. He was on his way out the door with his human. I nearly missed him.

I'd like to buy Big Boy a bowler hat.

Dog of the Week

Two for one! Here are a couple of brothers who came to visit our Bellevue store. In green is Sawyer. In blue is Winston. They have very nice sweaters.

One more little sausage-shaped dog in a red sweater, and they could have their own Dachshund version of The Brothers Karamazov.

Dog of the Week

Above you'll see a couple of dogs who live together. (It is my understanding that they are just roommates, nothing more. Like Neil Simon's The Odd Couple.)

So, the thing about this week's dogs of the week is I can't remember that first dog's name. I think his surname (according to his human) was Waterdog. His roommate's name was Jacque Le Poodle. Mr. Waterdog's first name, though, has eluded me.

For the heck of it, though, we'll call him Oscar.

tell all your friends!
