That's Schroeder. He was being very well-behaved, waiting for his human, sitting under a table by the window. He gave me a very friendly lick of the hand when I said hello.
Dog of the week, it's been good to have you back. We've had quite a dog dry spell at University Book Store, but the last few weeks have brought a new crop of four-legged, furry friends to our store, and we've been happy to share images of them with you.
Up there is a little boxer puppy named Bjorn. She didn't want her photo to be taken at first—preferring instead to sit in the photographer's lap—but when her human picked her up, she managed to pay attention and pose for the camera. Good girl, Bjorn.
Here's Brody. He's young. I expected him to be a little more energetic—being that he's a puppy and all—but apparently he was tuckered out from all the attention he'd been getting before I came at him with the camera.
This is Sydney. She genuinely enjoyed sniffing the store thoroughly. She also seemed to enjoy her cookie, once it had been thoroughly sniffed. She was about as friendly as a dog can possibly be without actually bursting.
This (kinda) is Skipper. He was really, really fast and really, really excited by all the people calling his name in the hope of getting him to look into the camera. This would be the best of the bunch, as skipper photos go.
The pause was a brief one, then he immediately returned to being Skipper. You get the idea. Good dog, Skipper.
Here's Fergie, a 6 year old sheepdog. We love Fergie. She has the most expressive eyes -- which never miss the sight of a good cookie, no matter how far away.
Fergie can come by the Used Desk any time she likes. We'll always be happy to see and be seen by her.
It's been awhile since we posted one, but here's a Dog of the Week. His name is Finn and he is about the sweetest boy ever to stop by for a treat at the Used Books Desk.
Despite the fresh snow that just started falling, Finn seems, quite sensibly, not to have opted for colorful -- not to say embarrassing -- Christmas dogwear.
He's clearly too much the young sport for such silliness.
Valentine's Day knocked Dog of the Week to Friday, but he's here. This is Deuce. Pretty fella, isn't he? Kind of looks like he has plans and schemes hatching behind those eyes.
Makes you want to read some books about the brain, doesn't. Well, by gum, we've got some. And we've got some on sale, too!
Here are three titles from our Neuroscience section that are (at least as of today, February 15, 2008) on sale:
Hey there book/dog fans. The Shelver is finally back from an extended vacation, and with him comes a brand new dog of the week.*
This is Cody:
He's young, and refuses to stop moving long enough for his picture to be taken, so instead, I made a little movie of him chewing on my shoe. And shoelace.
Good boy, Cody.
* And, apparently, a need to speak in the third person.**
** Speaking of odd choices for a narrator's voice, have any of you readers had a chance to check out Joshua Ferris's novel, Then We Came To the End. I'm a little late getting to it, I know, what with it being on quite a few top ten lists and getting the National Book Award nomination and all. Sorry. My reading list finally opened up a space.
I mention it, though, because it is in first person plural. We did this. We did that. An interesting strategy, usually. A difficult one to pull off, too, because it tends to imply that the story being told carries a lot of weight, as if the first person singular narrator wants to spread around the blame.
Above you'll see a couple of dogs who live together. (It is my understanding that they are just roommates, nothing more. Like Neil Simon'sThe Odd Couple.)
So, the thing about this week's dogs of the week is I can't remember that first dog's name. I think his surname (according to his human) was Waterdog. His roommate's name was Jacque Le Poodle. Mr. Waterdog's first name, though, has eluded me.
