Cory Doctorow!

You have to get your hands on Cory Doctorow's new DIY publishing project!

Cory has ingeniously embarked on a self publishing adventure for his new book, With a Little Help. With a Little Help is a collection of stories that are available instantly (and in book format) through a handful of Espresso Book Machines, including ours. You choose 1 of 4 different covers. We print it for you. You read it. If you find any typos you can email Cory and he'll update the next printed copy with the typo fix and your name in the footnotes. Imagine that!

We are so excited to be part of this project that we want to give away a few books. Leave a comment here telling us about the last book you read and we'll enter you to win a copy of With a Little Help. Don't forget to put your email address in the comment so we can contact you. Enter by Wednesday 8/17 at 10am PST.

You can see all the covers and order the books here.

    I just finished A Dance with Dragons! {Spoilerish} So much wheel-spinning, so little plot movement. Still, I enjoyed it.{/Spoilerish}

  2. I read The Tao of Wu. Even as a fan of The Rza's music I was surprised at how insightful his musings were. Bridging hip hop culture to Eastern philosophy to Islam with an easy to understand voice makes this simple to recommend. This from curtishalliday@hotmail.com.

    Last book I read was Timothy Zahn's Allegiance about 4 storm troopers who defect (or at least help out) to the Rebel Alliance, it also includes Mara Jade (the Emperor's Hand) and has an interesting perspective since most of the Star Wars material I've read or watched has been from the perspective of the "good guys" turns out some of the Imperials can have that moniker as well. I did read a book about Kyle Katarn as a storm trooper as well. It was a long time ago (and I cannot for the life of me remember the name)and was a really neat look into what it was like to be a storm trooper.

    I have to say I love all the covers for Cory's book!

    I just finished "For Us Surrender Is Out of the Question" by Mac McClelland, a history of Burma's never-ending wars. It was fascinating and heartbreaking; if only the UN would actually do something to help.

    Charles Stross's "Rule 34"

    Near future sci-fi about the intersection of the soft police state, 3-D printing and global financial shenanigans. Possibly the best book ever written in the second person.

    Charles Stross "rule 34"

    the name is a reason to read it in it's self. spammers start dieing in strange ways, who or what is killing them. 3d printers are awesome but they can make unlicensed guns or methlabs in a brick.

  19. Just finished Mark Hodder's debut - "The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack". It's a great tribute to the old Victorian pulp novels and features Sir Richard Francis Burton and poet Algernon Swinburne as investigators in a steampunk, alternate-reality Britain of the 1860's. It was quite a bit of fun, and Hodder pulls off the mixture of genre staples (time travel, alternate reality, steampunk) with great panache!

    I read a book about college life back in 70s. and it was an amazing journey through time.

  21. I finally read The Iron Heel by Jack London ("a socialist classic"). It was pedantic, dogmatic, and narcissistic -- like Ayn Rand's tomes but (1) on the opposite end of the political spectrum, (2) *not* sociopathic, and (3) *much, much* shorter. That being said, I was *amazed* at how accurately it described what is going on in the country today, a hundred years later. It was a tedious read, but it gave me a sense of what American socialists were thinking in the early 1900s.

    Just finished "The Communist Manifesto". Figured I'd read up on this communism thing which everyone hates so much, and yet knows so little about. Turns out Marx's ideas are sound, it's the implementation wherein lies the problem. I personally love his writing style, with so many comma's and addends, because it's very similar to my own. A highly interesting and informative read. :)
