This cute dog led me to the book you mentioned, Labrador Pact (thanks, Nila and The Shelver). As for novels with dogs as narrators, in addition to Sight Hound by Pam Houston and Walking in Circles Before Lying Down by Merrill Markoe, I'm particiularly enjoying The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Seattle author Garth Stein (coming later this spring; I snagged an advance copy).
